Vale Pat Hogan
Sadly, on Saturday 13th July 2019, the Mackie Cricket Club lost Past-President Pat Hogan, who passed away peacefully in his sleep after recently celebrating his 90th birthday at his beloved SOC (South Oakleigh Club). Appropriately Pat’s birthday was on St Patrick’s Day.
Pat Hogan served as Treasurer from 1974-76, and President from 1981-83. He became involved with the Mackie Cricket Club following his son John Hogan from juniors through to when ‘Hoges’ was ripping apart 1st Grade cricketers with his pace and swing. Pat himself was an outstanding footballer playing at the highest country football level. He understood sport and could pass on helpful information on football or cricket to anyone who wanted to listen.
Pat always had a happy greeting for anyone he spoke to. He made the juniors feel a big part of the club and his home was always there for the Mackie boys. We were a very young playing and admin group and his experience greatly helped, and he did his job extremely well. Pat had experience running hotels and put the canteen and bar structure in place. In his day, Pat introduced the ‘Can’s Awards’, which added greatly to the atmosphere of the club. When Tony ‘Traf’ Evans needed a break in his president role, Pat stepped in to help Mackie for the interim period. He did his job very well for the Machine.
His good nature and enthusiasm added to the family culture we encouraged. Being a young club, we wanted to attract the women and kids to stay around so a ‘feel good’ atmosphere was maintained.
A great man has left us. Rest in Peace, Pat.
A great demon man as well
Miss you mate
Love to the family
