The Mackie Cricket Club is delighted to announce our senior men’s captain for season 2022/23 is James Cooke.
A very familiar name around Mackie Rd Reserve as a regular 1st XI player over the last 7-8 seasons. His time at the club extends back to junior days in the U12’s. It is great to have his name join the long list of home grown talent that have progressed through the grades to captain the 1st XI.
When announcing the decision, club President, John Tantram stated “The club is very happy to have Cookey take on this leadership role. His contributions to Mackie over many years have established him as a vital part of ‘The Machine’.”
John continued “It is an exciting time to be at Mackie with the great mix of experienced players and very strong junior program.”
Last season was a challenging one for the 1st XI with a total of 21 players used throughout the 14 one day games. Like many clubs in the competition, the challenges of COVID were present throughout the season.
When asking Cooke his thoughts on the appointment, he responded “I am very happy to be appointed Captain of Mackie’s 1st XI. I am looking forward to leading the group forward. I have been fortunate to have experienced some fantastic captains and leaders throughout my time at Mackie.”
In response to his thoughts on the upcoming season, Cooke added “The club is in a very strong position to have a successful campaign in the Woolnough Shield this season. My goal as captain is to lead us back to the Longmuir Shield in the near term. I have a great bunch of guys around me to help us move forward.”
Cooke will have his first chance to lead the team out against last seasons runners-up, Cluden when we visit them at William St Reserve for the opening round 1 day match of the Woolnough Shield on Saturday 1st October.
We hope to see as many of the Machine faithful out to support Cookie, our senior men’s captain and the whole team for the opening round.
