Match Report – First game

Sandy-Mackie Turf Team v Geelong, Sun 7 Nov, at Dendy Park (home)

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good afternoon, must be in want of a cricket match.

With this in mind, it was a queer but sunny spring morning, and I didn’t know whether our Sandy-Mackie Turf Team was going to get in a game in or not.

Fortunately, the centre wicket looked plush, the run-ups were fine, and the only water was resting comfortably on the wicket cover. Within an hour, the toss had been won by Geelong, we’d been sent in, and the game was ready to begin.

Batting our full 40 overs, we made 9/189, with top scorers being Anton Pahoff 67, Mikel Guyetsky 45, and Dave Douglas 31no.

In return, after 20 overs, Geelong was 7/101. But cricket’s a funny game. Two experienced Geelong cricketers got together for a 96-run partnership and taken the game from us. Best bowling was Manas Regidi Sampath with 3/37, and Baden Park 2/42. In fielding, Anton took 3 catches and a runout, and sub, Paddy Niblett took a catch and a run out.

All in all, both teams enjoyed a game played in good spirits, with good umpiring.

Next week, Kardinia Park awaits.
