Some of you may have heard that John “JD” Delaney passed away last week.
When walking past the ground on match days, I’d see Jumbo, JD and Ian Isaacs sitting at the bench by the bowling club watching the game. Jumbo tells me that JD only played a handful of games for Mackie but was a supporter of the club from the age of 15, watching each game.
JD played footy for Bentleigh Methodists, the first footy club to be located at Mackie.
Mackie Reserve was built in 1962 for the Mackie Cricket Club. Bentleigh Methodists Footy Club relocated to Mackie in 1968 and played there until relocating behind the Bentleigh RSL as the Bentleigh Football Club.
Many will remember JD watching the cricket at Mackie, attending the various club functions, or going on trips away.
Here are a few photos to remember JD.
Just catching up on the website and noticed the passing of JD. Sad to see this news, JD was a great bloke, a true Mackie member and a terrific local footballer. I first met John as a fellow student in Grade 2 at Coatesville Primary, he towered over everyone back then. Tonight at 7 bells I will raise a glass to you and the good times you brought to the Club Rooms (second home).
