Hi all,
As we emailed to you earlier, the Glen Eira Council has placed a survey relating to ideas for the Mackie Masterplan, https://www.
As part of the Mackie Reserve community, and we have accumulated a unified response.
Responses to survey close next Thursday, 30 September.
The key questions, with responses immediately beneath, are:
1. What features or facilities do you use?
. Cricket facilities, Children’s playground, Pavilion, Cricket nets, Oval, BBQ, Walking track, Bench seating
2. What is your most important feature or facility at Mackie?
. Cricket facilities, Pavilion
3. What new or additional activities should be provided?
3a. Significantly larger social room to cater for at least 120 people.
– Existing pavilion is not conducive to holding social functions.
– It is small, dark, cold, lacks appropriate toilet facilities for females and lacks open space due to not being able to store tables and chairs when they are not required.
– In view of the above significant issues, functions need to be held away from Mackie. The impact of that is
o We are unable to make a profit on canteen food and bar sales
o Our members pay higher prices for their food and drinks
o We incur fees to hire other facilities
3b. Larger canteen
– Commercial kitchen canteen facilities so that quality food can be served all day / evening, with shaded outdoor benches and tables made of ‘Replas’ recycled plastic – replas.com.au/products/
– Is far too small and difficult for several people to be working in the canteen at the same time.
– Need for better access to service clientele who approach the canteen from outside the pavilion
– In hot weather the kitchen is basically a health hazard as there is no built-in fans / air-conditioning
3c. Improve storage – There is insufficient storage to cater for our needs hence the lack of open space and restriction of members moving inside the pavilion. Items that need to be stored are: Large sails, Tables and Chairs, Training aids eg Bowling machine and fielding nets, Uniforms for sale, Food and drinks to be sold in the canteen, Sponsorship banners
3d. A multi-purpose indoor sporting facility that community can use at day / night, instead of having to hire outside of Glen Eira – could be adjacent to or below pavilion.
3e. Provision of a Meeting room – There are no meeting rooms which makes it difficult to have private committee meetings without being disturbed by other members.
3f. Create additional shade – There is minimal shade being provided for players and spectators which during hot days is a health issue.
3g. Covered and illuminated cricket training nets that can be used at night.
3h. Car parking – If there is additional space available through the acquisition of the two houses perhaps the car park could be extended.
3i. Outside lighting that allows cricket to be played at night.
3j. A pavilion large enough to support local events – sporting & social functions – display our memorabilia and honour boards, and one that visually is attractive and reflects our community, with big glass windows, folding glass doors, and wide shading eaves.
3k. An out of pavilion area, maybe a flat roof like above the tennis pavilion at Moorleigh, where the community can socialise and watch sporting events from every direction.
3l. As the scouts no longer gather at Mackie, for our community, I would like to see their museum moved to another location.
3m. Raised seating area for spectators so they can see over the fence, similar to the one in front of the pavilion at Centenary Park.
3n. An outside exercise area that all the community including the sporting clubs can use – replas.com.au/products/
3o. A second oval.
3p. As global temperatures continue to rise, shaded public seating around the grounds and lots of trees.
4. Other comments?
4. It has been 60 years since Mackie Reserve and the pavilion was constructed. I want a new facility that will be functionally and visually appealing to the community for the next 60 years.
– The pavilion was built in 1965 to cater for two Senior teams and two Junior teams. This is now totally inadequate as we have 5 Senior teams, one Veterans team, a Women’s team, a Girls team and up to 9 Junior teams. This means the facilities are used virtually 7 days a week by a large number of both males and females.
– With the emergence of women in our teams the clubrooms definitely need separate changing rooms for women and more adequate toilets. Apart from the women players, we have a large number of females, (wives/partners of players, Junior parents and female spectators) and there are often problems/complaints from females due to the lack of toilet facilities for them.
– A larger and modern pavilion would see the pavilion become a multi-purpose pavilion with the ability to cater for other external community groups and casual users. The addition of at least one large meeting room would greatly assist this concept.
– The pavilion could be used by personal trainers, fitness classes, card groups or any other group that meet on a regular basis.
– A modern and large pavilion would attract more members to the club whilst enticing our members to further socialise in an attractive and safe environment. It would certainly enhance the reserve as the reserve is a very picturesque local park.
You may wish to put this in your own words and include those points that you feel strongly about.
The Council survey closes 30/9/21, so we request for you to get your responses posted, asap.
Again, responses can be posted on – https://www.
